1 At Ouachita Baptist University (pronounced “WASH-u-taw”), where the two of us teach, we have required the courses Old Testament Survey and New Testament Survey for all students — until recently, that is. Throughout the years, these traditional courses have supplied students with a healthy dose of historical background and theological content along with a nice touch of the devotional. It’s what we sensed our students were not getting that began to concern us. Were these courses helping them to see the overarching story of the Bible clearly enough to be able to live for Christ in a culture of competing stories?
As we mentioned earlier in this chapter, the standard text for the Old Testament is the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS).
